Pack 373 in Statesville, NC is a Cub Scout pack for youth in Kindergarten through 5th grade. We are chartered by Grace Baptist Church, and a part of the Piedmont Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).
Our Pack meets weekly at Grace Baptist Church, on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
We also organize two family camping outings each year (one in the Fall and one in the Spring) and gather for other special events like the annual Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold banquet, and several community service projects.
We have between 10-15 active Scout members in our Pack and a great team of trained volunteer leaders. Many of our Cub Scouts go on to join Scout Troop 373 after they earn their "Arrow of Light" in their final year of Cub Scouts.
Cub Scouting is for youth in Kindergarten through the 5th grade. Pack 373 accepts both boys and girls as Cub Scouts.
Cub Scouts is a lot of fun. Scouts get to do lots of cool stuff. We've tested our athletic skills, learned First Aid, told jokes around the campfire, conducted science experiments, learned how to whittle. We've also performed community service projects and marched in parades.
Each year is filled with a wide-range of age-appropriate activities aimed at teaching values, leadership skills, and outdoors skills. To keep track of it all, Pack 373 maintains an Scoutbook Calendar for our Pack-wide events.
In all of our activities, we emphasize the values embodied by the Scout Oath: "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."
A "pack" is a large group of Cub Scouts made up of several smaller "dens". A den is a group of between 4-12 Scouts who are typically in the same school grade and working on the same corresponding rank.
Kindergarteners are Lion Scouts
1st graders are Tiger Scouts
2nd graders are Wolf Scouts
3rd graders are Bear Scouts
4th and 5th graders are Webelos
Dens meet separately to work on requirements specific to their rank and appropriate to their age. All dens come together for pack meetings, camping trips, community service activities, and other events.
A Pack has a Cubmaster and each Den has a Den Leader. These are trained, volunteer leaders who run the Pack's and Dens' activities. In addition, each Pack has a Committee that oversees its organization and provides support to the Cub Master and Den Leaders.
Cub Scouting, especially at the early stages, is all about parental / familial participation. At least one parent is expected to attend all Pack meetings and help guide his/her Scout through the process, acting as the Scout's "Akela." As the Scouts get older and progress up the ranks, Scouts become more independent and are able to take on more responsibility for completing their requirements. Families are welcome and encouraged to participate in all of our events.
In Pack 373, all Scouts and parents attend a weekly pack meeting (Thursday evenings, 6:30-7:30pm). Beyond these regular meetings, there are special events throughout the year like the Pinewood Derby, Rocket Academy, community service projects, and camping trips.
Joining Cub Scouts is easy! Just follow the link here to our "Joining Pack 373" page for new scouts. There is a simple, one-page application form and there are annual dues, paid annually at your joining date. Occasionally, some of our special outings will require an additional payment by participating family members. Families also need to purchase a Scout uniform as well as a "Class B" uniform. Though not required, we also encourage families to purchase a Cub Scout handbook for their child's corresponding rank.
The Cub Scout motto is easy to remember: "Do your best!" It's all about camping, service, fun with friends -- and more. It's the adventure of a lifetime. Cub Scouts is a great way for youth to become thoughtful citizens and future leaders.
